-- Reduce/Eliminate Personal Use of Tobacco Products

Gold Standard:

Eliminate all use of tobacco products (cigarettes, chew, snuff, cigars, pipes) "Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body, causing many diseases and reducing the health of smokers in general."

--Surgeon General 2004

There are no safe tobacco products.  All forms of tobacco are dangerous to smokers.  Most types of tobacco products are also harmful to those around them.  Quitting can be hard.  Most smokers need to try quitting several times before they are successful.  If you did not succeed before, don't give up.  Each time you tried, you learned something about what makes you start up again.

The best advice is: Keep trying and you will be successful!

Take a STEP to Health.

  • Have a plan.  You must break your body from the effects of nicotine. Next, you have to break the habit.  California has a no-cost helpline for all types of tobacco use.

  • Find Quit classes to get support and ideas on how to quit and to stay quit.

  • Pick the right time to Quit.  Avoid times of high stress or holidays.

  • Learn about the different kinds of experiences your body may have while quitting.  It is not the same for everyone, so be prepared.

  • Talk to your doctor about Quit helps. [Nicotine patches, gum, other safe aides]

  • Exercise every day.  Exercise can make you feel better and keep unwanted weight off.

  • Eat healthy foods and drink plenty of water.

  • Get support from friends and family while you are quitting.

Look At Your Environment!

Second-hand tobacco smoke is smoke exhaled by a smoker or from a tobacco product he/she is using, that in turn exposes a second person to the smoke. It includes smoke from a smouldering cigarette, cigar, pipe or other tobacco material.

Take it Outside - Secondhand smoke is bad for EVERYONE who breathes it.

Take it Outside - There is no safe amount of exposure to secondhand smoke.

Secondhand smoke can increase a nonsmoker's risk of serious illnesses.  The nonsmoking person is exposed to the same tar, nicotine and cancer-causing chemicals as the smoker.  It can make children sick.  It is dangerous for babies. People with asthma or other health problems can suffer.  Even pets can get sick from secondhand smoke.

Take a STEP to Health for those around you.

  • Keep smoke away from others.

  • Take the smoke outside of your home and car.

  • Set up a comfortable place to smoke outside if you are not ready to quit right now.
