Book Review

This month's feature writer Sandy Metzger suggests two references for Cottage Garden design. And respected Master Gardener Dr. Wylie Hartman has been a convert to low water gardening for several years; he feels that the 'bible' on such plants is Plants and Landscapes for Summer-Dry Climates. . . . . .

Coping with Drought

State mandated water shortages are with us, and probably a factor of life from here on out.  Water-wise gardening has to stay in the forefront of everyone's thoughts.  Lawn replacement, with less thirsty alternatives remains the highest priority. Cities and water agencies around the county may increasingly help with the cost of water conservation and lawn replacement. Sonoma City and Valley of the Moon Water District both have "cash for grass" lawn replacement subsidy programs, and the Sonoma County Water Agency has announced a long-term low cost conservation loan program which commenced this spring. The City of Santa Rosa also has a cash-for grass, and irrigation controller subsidy Green Exchange program.

Good advice to Sonoma Gardeners this summer is to plant NOTHING until fall, when the rains can establish new plants. Still, if you must plant, consult the list we've  developed of very drought tolerant plants--that need NO supplemental summer water after establishment.

Proper Mulching is one of several Drought Strategies that are

important, as is  Drip Irrigation (look for an article in coming months on converting existing overhead spray systems to drip). The use of hardscape in garden design can also cut down on both water and maintenance.

When fall planting time comes, Ornamental Grasses are a wonderful design element, and also a great lawn replacement strategy. Xeriscapic plants are  a class which need relatively little water. Since it's the type of climate we live in, Mediterranean Gardening is a great approach to water saving.
