Top Plants for Sonoma County

fourplantsquarebanner

As Master Gardeners we are often asked which plants grow best locally. Top Plants for Sonoma County, is a compendium of species that can survive our wet winters and dry summers with minimal care. Plants suited or adapted to local conditions not only use less water, but generally grow more successfully and robustly, with fewer insect and disease problems. They ultimately create a healthier, more beautiful and more sustainable landscape. Some of the plants on the list are California natives while others are native to other Mediterranean climates around the world. All flourish here in Sonoma County.

A few words explaining terminology. Exposure to sunlight is indicated as either sun, part-shade--which roughly means 3-6 hours of sun, and sun/part-shade--which means the plant will tolerate either. Generally, plants grown in coastal or mild microclimates can withstand more sun than those in hot, inland areas. Choisya, for example, grows beautifully in full sun in SE Sebastopol or NE Petaluma, but needs some shade in Santa Rosa or Kenwood.  Likewise, water requirements depend on soil conditions and location within the county. Our water designations are drought-tolerant, which means little to no water once established; occasional, which means the plant doesn't require regular water but benefits from a soaking once a month or so; low, which means watering once a week on average; and moderate, which means a couple of times a week if overhead or every other day or so on drip. Keep in mind that Sonoma is a large county, with several different micro-climates--your own microclimate and precise planting location will affect the way your plants grow as well.  In future weeks, we will add descriptions with more details on specific cultural conditions and requirements for various Sonoma County sub-regions.

Finally, this list is not intended to be exhaustive. There are many more plants that can be—and are—grown successfully in Sonoma County. However, the list represents a thorough collection of the ones with which most gardeners are likely to enjoy the most success. So dive in to explore the Top Plants for Sonoma County.
