This represents a significant loss of processing capacity in Northern California and removes a market for the small diameter logs that come from restoration projects. It will also have a significant economic and social impact. A......

If you have project ideas for that will utilize woody biomass material from National Forests in California there is still time to put together a proposal. The application package is at the Technolgy Marketing Unit website

The flare is after cooling and bag filtration of the gas produced from wood chips. It is shown flaring at night and also during the day (it is harder to see the flare during daylight).
This project is located in California and will demonstrate electricity generation from the gas using an internal combustion engine. The system will be connected to the electricity grid. It......

Northern Nevada Correctional Center

Last week, on the way to Mammoth Lakes for Sierra Solutions, I visited the biomass fueled cogeneration plant at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center, at Carson City, with Dave Atkins (Fuels for Schools) and Marcus Kauffman (Resource Innovations). The facility is in the red/brown building in the middle right of the above picture. We met with Jason Perock from the Nevada Division of Forestry and Ken Lyngar the plant manager. The facility is designed to produce 1 MW of electricity and to......

Juvenile Wood = Problems

While visiting a sawmill in northern California last week, I saw the effects of juvenile wood in stacks of lumber after they had come out of the kiln.
Lumber from small diameter trees often contains lots of juvenile wood
Juvenile wood comprises the core through the first 5 to 20 growth rings within a tree. Juvenile wood is different from wood derived from the outer growth rings. Its morphology means that it is prone to movement such as warp, sweep and twist. It is also prone to cupping......

Most of the focus has been on East Coast suppliers and customers). It looks like the impact is starting to head west.
