Light Brown Apple Moth

As you may already know, the light brown apple moth is an insect from Australia that has a wide array of host plants and is threatening the agricultural business in our state. So far it hasn't hit the San Joaquin Valley, and state officials would really like to keep it that way! Deputy Agricultural Commissioner, Cathy Roache has asked us to help get the word out about this pest.

Per a recent conference call, we have received information that homegrown fruits and vegetables (including leafy green vegetables), though not cut flowers or decorative greens, may be moved within the confines of a quarantined area, including donations to food banks.  Any fruit or vegetables that are spoiled or damaged should not be moved.  For further information contact the California Department of Agriculture, San Mateo County Health System - Agriculture or the San Mateo County Agriculture Commissioner's Office,

 The San Mateo & San Francisco Master Gardeners are a dedicated, trained group of volunteers with a shared love of gardening and horticulture. Through community service and educational outreach, they provide home gardeners and community organizations the knowledge and skills to create a healthy environment for the counties. Since 2006, our Master Gardeners have worked as non-paid staff members of the University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE), answering public inquiries and providing information on all areas of plant health and gardening practices.
