2010 Workshop and Open Garden Schedule

Every drop counts, every day. Whether that drop means more produce dropping in your basket or one less drop of garden sweat, it all adds up. Our 2010 workshop programs focus on how to garden smarter with University-approved methods that can reduce your work load while increasing your garden’s beauty and bounty. So drop on by the FOHC and join us for these useful and informative sessions—because every drop counts! Reservations are not necessary.

| January 9 Saturday 9 am-noon | Every Drop Counts A little winter work saves a lot of summer sweat... ...and produces great fruit. Plant and train fruit trees, cane berries, blueberries. Manage pests using the least toxic options. Help the rain soak into your soil: create a rain garden. |
| February 6 Saturday 9 am-noon | Every Drop Counts Make the most of every drop of water Design and manage an efficient irrigation system. Prune and care for grapes. Select and maintain ornamental grasses. Guided walk in the Water-Efficient Landscape gardens. |
| March 6 Saturday 9 am-noon | Every Drop Counts Citrus: A really juicy subject Grow and enjoy citrus all year. Taste citrus varieties. Grow your own fresh vegetables–what you need to know. Put nature to work in your garden: compost your yard trimmings. |
| April 14 Wednesday 9 am-noon | Open Garden Special Wednesday open garden Drop by to see our gardens on your own. Talk to Master Gardeners as they work. Ask gardening questions. Because every drop counts, we offer advice to grow by! |
| May 1 Saturday 8:30-11:30am | Every Drop Counts Practice smart watering for healthier plants Water effectively: irrigation methods, frequency and quantity for different plant types. Keep your berries healthy; taste berries. Attract beneficial insects, skip the insecticides. |
| June 5 Saturday 8:30-11:30am | Open Garden Drop in to see the Fair Oaks Horticulture Center gardens on your own. Ask Master Gardeners questions about the FOHC and see how we make every drop count. |
| August 7 Saturday 8 am-2 pm | Harvest Day 2010 Watch demonstrations and how-to sessions, listen to speakers, visit educational booths, and tour the FOHC gardens. Sample tree-ripened fruit, grapes, and vegetables. |
| Sept. 11 Saturday 8:30-11:30am | Open Garden Drop by to see the gardens on your own and get ideas and advice from Master Gardeners about creating a beautiful and productive river-friendly, earth-friendly garden. |
| October 2 Saturday 9 am-noon | Every Drop Counts Effective watering: Use every drop wisely Re-think your irrigation system. Reduce your lawn size: consider turfgrass alternatives. Plan before you plant fruit trees. Create gardener’s gold: composting and worm composting. |
| New this year! In response to many requests from FOHC workshop attendees for longer sessions, we have increased the time devoted to some topics. These longer sessions allow us to give you more information and let you ask more questions. Expanded sessions are in bold italics on the Workshop and Open Garden Schedule above. These presentations are divided into two or three parts, and you may attend any or all of them. |
Also new this year! Along with the listed topics, every workshop includes a discussion of timely garden maintenance tips–things to do in your garden during that time of year.
