Volunteer Opportunities with County Extension
The primary purposes of the workgroup are to foster interdisciplinary exchange between the pest management sciences and to increase county-campus networking and cooperation in the area of pest management. The workgroup will sponsor a biannual statewide conference in odd numbered years, plan and sponsor specialized educational workshops in areas related to pest management, maintain a web site describing workgroup activities, and keep workgroup members informed about pest management activities around the state. The workgroup may propose research or evaluation projects as deemed appropriate.
Pest management encompasses all disciplines involved in the prevention of pests or their damage. The workgroup therefore includes entomologists, plant pathologists, weed scientists, nematologists, vertebrate specialists, scientists involved with pesticides or other pest management technologies, as well as people involved with commodities or sites requiring protection from pests.
History
The Pest Management in DANR Workgroup was established in FY 1999-00 as the IPM in DANR Workgroup. The name was changed by the Steering committee prior to the submission of the 2000-01 proposal. The workgroup held a statewide Pest Management Coordinating Conference for ANR pest management personnel on March 8 and 9, 2001 in Sacramento. In 2001-02, the workgroup was funded for two years. Major projects are a Weather Instrumentation Workshop that was held in November 2001 and another statewide Pest Management Coordinating Conference held in Fall 2002. The workgroup became a coordinating committee in August 2003 to provide a forum for interaction among all the pest management workgroups.
The 2004 conference was held at the Mission Inn in Riverside on November 2 and 3. Mary Louise Flint and Cheryl Wilen were co-chairs.
