Don't relax in that lawn chair yet. The October garden needs your attention to guarantee a healthy start next spring.
Lawns: Reseed or put in new lawn. Aerate and de-thatch existing lawn.
Perennials: Dig, divide and replant overgrown iris and other perennials.
Vegetables: Remove plants that have finished bearing. Start peas, spinach, lettuce, garlic, onions, leeks, beets and other cool-weather vegetables. Harvest pumpkins.
Fruit trees: Spray citrus with copper to prevent brown rot. Fertilize citrus.
Trees and shrubs: Remove water basins before rains begin. Apply chelated iron to azaleas, citrus and gardenias.
Wildflowers: Sow seeds.
Plant: Spring bulbs and alyssum.
