Luminaries 1
On Saturday, December 7, 2002 Master Gardeners and the Discovery Center entertained over 1,200 Fresno residents at the third annual Noche de las Luminarias, the Night of the Soft Lights. Over 4000 candle lit paper bags lined the adobe-lined pathways at the Discovery Center, the Garden of the Sun and the Deutsch Cactus Garden. This great event introduced many to the Garden of the Sun who will come back to see the demonstration garden in the daytime. After months of planning and numerous volunteer hours leading up to the night of lights, the event was very successful.

Pictured to the left are bags with sand and candles in them awaiting for nightfall so they can be lit and glow. The center field featured a shooting star, a five-pointed star and a saguaro cactus in Luminarias. Many pathways in the garden where lit up as well as the dinosaur in the Garden of the Sun Children’s garden. Children activities such as making corn husk dolls and your own luminaria were available.

As people wandered through the garden, local talent entertained them with Christmas music and caroling. Santa Clause made an appearance to the delight of children and adults alike. Warm Southwestern desserts, hot spiced cider and cocoa were provided to keep attendees warm in the brisk night air. Also to keep you warm were two bond fires.
