About Master Gardeners

The purpose of the UC Master Gardener program is to extend to the public research based information verified by UC experts about home horticulture. 

Interested adult volunteers go through a training and certification process which includes a 16-week training course and devoting 50 volunteer hours back to the program outreach the first year.  Training topics include, plant botany, disease and insects, weed science, plant propagation, irrigation, soil science, home vegetable gardening, fruit trees and grapes, landscape trees, turf and diagnosing plant problems. 

In exchange for training and materials received, Master Gardeners perform a variety of volunteer services.
