Field Research and Farm Operations Managment conducts its activities within two critical areas of responsibility:
Field Research. KREC provides project management and support for applied research on agricultural and environmental issues. We possess a combination of skills, knowlegde and experience in managing and executing standard cultural ans experimental design practices for about 40 crops, both perennial and annual. We offer varying levels of management in support of the researcher to achieve a successful project outcome. Researchers may find it advantageous to rely on our group for help with day to day management of the research plot for routine
Project support may include assistance with the project design and physical layout; the fabrication or modification of specialized equipment; the coordination of field labor from planting to harvest; and the collection and recording of critical research data. We are onsite to assist with the timely care of you project. Other associated responsibilities include record-keeping of field activities for future reference and compliance with regulatory agencies, including health and safety and University policies. Please don't assume your work cannot be conducted here, ask us, you might be surprised with what we can do.
Farm Operations. This area of responsibility emphasizes the long-term sustainability and preservation of the Center's resources for future generations of research. Included in this process are land management and planning, and crop rotation to return fields to uniformity in preparation for assignment to new research. When a project is completed and the field returned to the Center, an analysis and long range plan is put into place. Typically, a regimen of uniform cropping is employed in an effort to erase from the field the memory of former project, which may require several years. Permanent plantings that are released may still have value and can be assigned to new projects, thus saving the time and expense of developing a new orchard or vineyard.
