Nine barns of various function are found on the premises and include the following:
In addition to those are three mixing-pen shelters and seven field shelters. A certifiable livestock platform scale is in the main barn.
Main Sheep Barn
The Main Sheep Barn is a 9600-square foot facility designed to handle up to 540 sheep. This barn consists of eighteen 256-square foot pens, each with hay/pellet feedbunks and water troughs. Nine 256-square foot center pens, each with hay/pellet feedbunks are capable of holding seventy-two 15-square foot lambing jugs for ewe/lamb bonding. Separating main corridors of pens are two 6-foot wide concrete alleyways with an multitude of multi-direction swing gates to custom design sheep movement corridors. Eighteen 525-square foot holding pens adjacent to the barn are roof-covered. This barn is well lit and is equipped with hot/cold water, electricity, refrigerator (non-food), digital read-out/programmable scales, pregnancy scanner, and handling pens. Most indoor herd management operations occur in this facility including all lambing, shearing, individual weighing and identification, research involving lamb fostering, single-sire breeding, and sheep behavior.
Adjacent to, and in association with, this barn are corrals and a roofed sorting chute capable of sorting up to 900 animals six different ways. Also, a chain-hoisted chute is capable of loading sheep onto trucks up to triple-deck in height.
The Nutrition Barn encloses six 340-square foot pens and a center alley-way. Adjacent to these pens are eight 580-square foot outside pens. This barn is equipped with electricity and lights, hot and cold water, and simple office/storage space. Traditionally this barn has been used for research purposes involving single-sire breeding, lamb grafting, ewe/lamb mixing, and sheep behavior.
The Hay Barn is a 1820-square foot, concrete-floored, three-sided, pole barn capable of holding 100 tons of baled hay. This barn is equipped with electricity.
The Feed Storage Barn is a 1800-square foot, three-sided, pole barn consisting of three open concrete-floored pellet storage bins capable of holding 75 tons each. Two of the three bins are gated and locked. A "bobcat" loader and feed auger wagon are available for feed distribution. This barn is equipped with electricity.
The Horse Barn is an 812-square foot facility consisting of a 75-square foot rodent-proof feed room, a 144-square foot hay storage room, and three separate 144-square foot stalls. This facility is equipped with electricity.
The Quarantine Facility is a covered 1040-square foot concrete pad with metal panels comprising two 260-square foot isolation pens, an alley-way, and sorting chute. The facility has washdown capability into a dedicated septic system. It is equipped with electricity, hot and cold water, stainless steel double sink, and portable foot-baths. A portable loading chute leads from the sorting chute. Two outside, earth-floored pens, 840 and 500-square foot, are adjacent. This facility is used to quarantine incoming sheep to protect the Center's flock from disease contamination.
The Old Shearing Barn is a historical redwood barn located at headquarters. It is 1032-square feet at ground level with an additional 500-square feet of elevated platform space. It is equipped with minimal electricity, and currently used for storage of miscellaneous equipment.
The Vasser Barn, a historical redwood barn, was recently renovated, and is located in Vasser Pasture. This barn is 3840-square feet, complete with fourteen 130-square foot pens, each with water trough and feed bunk. The barn is earth-floored with the center portion capable of storing 50 tons of baled hay. Traditionally, this facility has been used for research involving single-sire breeding and mixing pens for ewes and lambs. It is equipped with non-potable water only.
The Niderost Barn is a historical redwood barn located near Niderost Pastures. This is a primitive barn with 1530-square feet of space, partially wood-floored and partially earth-floored. It's used for occasional storage of tractor and/or attachments.
The Mixing-pen Shelters are located in Watershed I, Foster, and Buck Pastures. These range from three to eight pen shelters for the mixing of ewes and lambs previous to turning them out onto the open range. Non-potable water supplies water troughs in each pen.
The Field Shelters are essentially three-sided, pole-barn style, covered shelters to protect sheep from inclement weather. There are seven of these located in seven of the lower-elevation pastures.
The Howe Livestock Scale has a 10,000 lb. capacity for livestock and 6,000 lb. capacity for small vehicles. This scale is certifiable. It is typically used to weigh lambs, sheep, and pellet feed.
