Site Builder Instructions

The Text Editor

The Text Editor, also known as a WYSIWYG editor, allows you to create interesting, custom pages for your site without knowing any HTML. Many of the functions available with the Text Editor are similar to what you have seen with applications like Microsoft Word or WordPerfect.

The Text Editor does not currently work with Safari for the Mac. If you would like to take advantage of the Text Editor and are using a Mac with no other browsers, consider downloading Mozilla Firefox.

Overview of the Text Editor

Top Buttons

On the top left, you will find the bold, italic and strikethrough buttons, followed by buttons for numbering, bullets, indenting and alignment. Highlight a group of sentences in separate paragraphs and click on the numbers or bullets to instantly create lists. To set up a blockquote, click the indent button. To remove a blockquote, click the unindent button. The alignment buttons cannot be used to wrap text around images. For information on wrapping text around images, please visit the Placing a File with a File Code section of the Placing Files page.

After the alignment buttons, you will see the anchor, table, horizontal line and special character buttons. The last buttons on the top group are the undo, redo and link options. Place your cursor wherever you want the horizontal rule to be placed prior to clicking the button. After you have used the hyperlink button to create a link, click anywhere in the word and click the hyperlink button to edit it.Table properties cannot be edited once the table has been created without knowledge of HTML.

Lower Buttons

On the bottom left row, you will find two dropdown lists controlling the font type and size. The font types are web-safe and somewhat limiting. This is done to ensure your audience will be able to view the site as you intended. Next to these items is the text color change button.

Next the text color change button is the find button, to search for words in your text, and the replace button which will go through your document, find, and replace items. Following is the remove format button which will remove all formatting from your page.

The maximize button next to source will convert the text box to full screen, a handy feature when working on longer pages. Lastly, the source button allows you to view your text in HTML. If you are comfortable with using HTML, this toggle will be a valuable asset for adjusting the properties of your page. Please note that you cannot place Javascript or other dynamic codes into the HTML editor. It will be stripped out prior to being placed in our database.

A Note on Spell Check: There is no built-in spell checker for the Text Editor. We recommend you use the spell checker in FireFox or download the plug-in spell checker for Internet Explorer.
