Figs grown commercially in California, as well as other parts of the world are descendants of species native to Asia. Figs are taxonomically placed in the family Moraceae (woody trees, shrubs, and vines) within the large genus of plants, Ficus, which includes over 800 named species.

Figs were introduced into California in 1759 by Spanish priests within the mission of San Diego. After their introduction in San Diego, fig trees were planted at each succeeding mission along California's Camino Real, which stretches past San Francisco. This history explains the the naming of the Mission fig cultivar.
