ANR Analytical Lab

Research Proposals

The ANR Analytical Laboratory invites County Advisors and Cooperative Extension Specialists to apply to its "Research Project Grant" program. This program is designed to provide seed funding (i.e., analyses at no charge) for projects establishing baseline data that may result in extramural funding and for small projects (1-2 years) where extramural funding is unavailable. Higher priority will be given to new academics submitting proposals, to pilot or new projects, and/or to one-year projects for which other funding cannot be obtained. Proposals are reviewed and approved, as appropriate, by the Laboratory Advisory Committee. Just in the past five years, the ANR Analytical Lab has supported 66 research projects providing over 51,000 determinations. This program has contributed to successful competition for external grants by our investigators and improved many aspects of our State's agricultural industry.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTING RESEARCH PROJECT PROPOSALS

Purpose: This program is designed to provide seed funding (i.e., analyses at no charge) for projects establishing baseline data that may result in extramural funding and for small projects (1-2 years) where extramural funding is unavailable. Higher priority will be given to new academics submitting proposals, to pilot or new projects, and/or to one-year projects for which other funding cannot be obtained.

Eligibility: All UCCE County Advisors and Specialists

Deadlines: The ANR Analytical Laboratory Advisory Committee reviews submitted research proposals twice each year. The deadlines for proposal submission are February 1 and August 1.

Scope of Support: Typically, the maximum budget request for an individual research proposal should be not more than $2,500; if a proposal exceeds that figure, the request must be clearly justified.

Proposal Outline: Submit a proposal prepared in the established format. The proposal should not exceed two pages (excluding required budget pages).

Award Criteria: Proposals are reviewed and scored in four areas (Scientific Merit, Project Design, Appropriateness of the Budget, and Relevance to ANR Program Priorities). In addition, the ANR Analytical Laboratory Advisory Committee evaluates the following:

1) the ability of the ANR Analytical Laboratory to provide the required analytical support; and,

2) the history of previous ANR Analytical Lab awards to the investigator in terms of progress reports and research results.

Final Report: A Final Report prepared in the established format must be submitted to the ANR Analytical Lab (danranlab@ucdavis.edu) upon completion of the project.

Special Notes:

  • Ongoing research covered by awarded allocations must be renewed or resubmitted annually. A yearly progress report is requested. (Submit the report via e-mail to the ANR Analytical Laboratory.)
  • The ANR Analytical Laboratory must be acknowledged in all reports or publications resulting from approved projects. Failure to do so will impact consideration for future support.
