A Favorite Returns
Drippy oak, redgum lerp, raspberry horntail, little mallow, Asian ambrosia beetle, velvety tree ant; gardeners and landscape professional meet these pests and many more in the new edition of an old favorite: Pests of Landscape Trees and Shrubs: An Integrated Pest Management Guide, 2nd Edition.
Used by gardening professionals, Master Gardeners, and home gardeners, the first edition of Pests of Landscape Trees and Shrubs took an objective and thorough approach to diagnosis and management of insect, mite, weed, plant disease, and nematode pests. This helped make this book among the “top 10” list every month since 1994. In this newly released edition, IPM Senior Writer Steve Dreistadt and Communication Services Principal Photographer Jack Clark expanded its content by 25 percent by including more types of ornamental trees and shrubs, more pests and diseases, and more photographs and illustrations.
Although it is a huge job, the IPM Program regularly updates and revises its publications, both printed and electronic. Its online Pest Notes and Pest Management Guidelines are reviewed and revised every three years or as needed, and the IPM manuals every 8 to 10 years. “Things go out-of-date, especially in the pest management area,” says Mary Louise Flint, Director of IPM Pest Management Education and Publications, and the book’s technical editor. “There are new pests and new pest technologies.” Flint acknowledges that having permanent writers on staff allows this regular and extensive updating.
Even with staff writers to spearhead those projects, the IPM Program relies on the assistance of other UC researchers, Extension advisors and specialists, and external landscape professionals, particularly on a book of this scope. These contributors provide feedback, review material, give answers to specific questions, and even locate places where a particular pest can be photographed.
