CS@Work 2002 April  California Master Gardener Handbook

Master Gardener Handbook
Master Gardener Handbook
Sometimes the best is worth waiting for. Back in the mid 1980s, Area Environmental Horticulture Advisor Dennis Pittenger thought there was a need for a reference for Master Gardeners, something that would provide continuity in their training throughout the state. But, as Pittenger’s idea developed into the California Master Gardener Handbook, he recognized the book’s broader potential.

"Although my primary impetus was to develop a comprehensive training reference for Master Gardeners," Pittenger says, "my vision for this book for a long time was for it to be a central source of UC’s in-depth knowledge on a variety of horticulture-related topics that apply to home horticulture interests. It also fits the need for other professionals in the green industry, particularly those in the retail nursery trade who interact with homeowners on a regular basis."

Getting the chapters assigned and written, then working with ANR associate editors on peer review compliance and with Communication Services throughout the book’s production, took Pittenger another 10 years. There were moments during that time that he wondered if it would ever get done, and then, once it neared completion, if the word would get out about the book beyond UC’s Master Gardener community.

Pittenger need not have worried. Shortly after its release and promotion to the home and gardening press by Communication Services marketing manager Cynthia Kintigh, the first reviews supported his initial vision, and then some. "A new bible on the block for home gardeners," wrote one garden editor. "Although the book’s authors are scientists, the information is presented in a way that anyone with an interest in gardening will appreciate," wrote another. And California gardeners—not just Master Gardeners—have enthusiastically responded. The book is nearly sold out of its first print run, and another print run of 10,000 copies has been delivered.

Pittenger’s reaction to the apparent success of his book? "I’m pleased, but not surprised. There is nothing like it: the in-depth explanations, what to do and why you should probably do it, the quality of design and layout, its readability. The whole package is excellent." He also is quick to point out that the book’s quality is a testament to excellent contributions by the chapter authors and coauthors. "Without their dedication to this project, it would not have happened," he adds.

The California Master Gardener Handbook is 702 pages, with black-and-white photos, line illustrations, and a glossary of terms. It includes chapters on individual crop cultural practices and, when applicable, nutrition of edible crops, plus chapters on related disciplines such as soil and water management, weeds and insect pests, and landscape plants and design. Copies of the book (ANR Publication 3382) are being sold by Communication Services for $30, with discounts available for Division personnel and Master Gardeners. Each UCCE office received a copy for its files.
