Integrated Pest Management for Walnuts
|

IPM For Walnuts | Walnut growers who have stayed abreast of recent research developments are managing their pests very differently now than they did 10 years ago. They hang pheromone dispensers in their trees to disrupt the mating of codling moths. They release wasps that parasitize codling moth eggs. Growers also schedule walnut husk fly treatments by examining trapped female flies to see when they are ready to lay eggs. For walnut blight, some growers are relying on a new computer model that uses weather information to predict when sprays are needed. These new techniques and many more are detailed in the completely revised and expanded Integrated Pest Management for Walnuts, Third Edition, written by Larry L. Strand of the UC Statewide IPM Program, with input from 30 University and industry specialists. The new book covers 24 additional pest problems and contains greatly expanded chapters on vertebrate pests and weed management. It is illustrated with 215 color photos; 65 more than in the previous edition, and printed with improved color quality.
