Welcome letter
Dear Conference Participants:
Welcome to the 33rd International Carrot Conference at the Embassy Suites Inn Anaheim South. We are gathered here because we all share an interest in carrots, either from a pest management, breeding, production, or marketing standpoint. Each of us has some knowledge to share and desire to learn more about the production and marketing of carrots. With that in mind, we have put together what we believe will be both an enjoyable and learning experience for everyone.
The 33rd International Carrot Conference has a full agenda of presenters from all four corners of the world. Topics of discussion will include production, plant pathology, nematology, breeding and variety evaluation, and food safety. We will have two full days of presentations and also several exciting posters on display.
Monday’s events will include a dinner banquet sponsored by Bayer CropScience. The evening banquet will feature a keynote address from Wendy Martin of the California Department of Water Resources on the effects of the current drought situation in California and what part, if any, global warming has played.
At the conclusion of the formal presentations on Tuesday, a very special evening is planned with a banquet dinner and entertainment by the Sons of the San Joaquin to enjoy excellent food and old fashioned cowboy music. Whether you are a Western music fan or not, this promises to be a real treat. The Sons of the San Joaquin have traveled throughout the world to share their love of cowboy music.
We will conclude Wednesday with a carrot variety field tour of over 150 different carrot varieties, including root knot nematode resistant and colored carrot varieties, planted at the UC South Coast Field Station. Afterwards we plan to enjoy lunch and visit a historic California Mission.
These four days are a great opportunity for all of us interested in carrots to share ideas, news, and recent research findings. It is also an opportunity to socialize and interact with colleagues and friends from around the world. It is our goal to make this conference both enjoyable and informative for everyone.
This conference could not happen without the help of many dedicated people and generous donations from sponsors. Please take a moment to read the lists of committee members, conference staff, and sponsors, and say thank you when you have a chance.
Sincerely,
Joe Nunez
