This DANR workgroup is a collaborative of individuals from the University of California, the Sacramento County Department of Education, the YMCA, California Parks and Recreation and CSU Northridge. Individuals from the University of California are housed at UC Davis or are located in the counties. The group came together in an attempt to encourage positive youth development in California. Positive youth development ideas are typically listed under "asset" building, resiliency, communities of promise, etc. Several counties in California have taken the initiative in bringing this approach to their communities. For example, San Luis Obispo has formed an asset network and Santa Clara is highly involved in what is called the Cornerstone project. This workgroup will attempt to document what happened in these two counties. Information from these two counties will be used to help two new counties just beginning the process: Los Angeles (Pasadena) and Stanislaus (Modesto). We hope documentation of the process will prove useful to other communities that would like to take a positive approach towards youth development.
