Position Description
This program is specifically designed for students who are interested in the interface between science and food production, problem solving, public education and outreach. The successful candidate will be trained through this internship in field research and outreach methods as appropriate. The candidate will learn agricultural production and pest management and other skills from experienced UC Farm Advisors, farmers, faculty on campus, and agricultural professionals. It is hoped that the intern will become interested in the Crop Science applied fields (specifically Pomology) and potentially in a career with the University of California Cooperative Extension upon graduating from college. Students should note that a minimum of a Master's degree is currently a requirement for all UC Farm Advisor positions.
1). 6 - 12 Month Internship
This is a full time graduate internship consisting of up to a twelve month period for Masters or PhD students. Internship is eligible for extension, dependent upon qualifications and availability of funds.(Program Representative II position on campus - currently $2,800/mo + benefits) Start date has some flexibility.
2). 3 - 4 Month Internships
This is a part time undergraduate or graduate student internship consisting of a full time internship. This position is aimed at graduate students or Junior or Senior undergrads who are interested in agricultural research and extension work as a possible career path. ($12.00-16.00/hr Student Assistant, depending upon qualifications, some benefits)
Qualifications:
6 - 12 Month Graduate Student or recent BS/MS/PhD Alumni Internship
Candidate may be recently graduated BS, MS or PhD student, or currently enrolled graduate student in the biological or agricultural sciences (or related fields, such as pest management or environmental sciences), with a strong interest in applied sciences and agricultural systems.
3 - 4 Month Internship, Undergrad or Graduate Student
Candidate must be a full time undergrad or graduate student. Student must be in good standing with an excellent record from recognized public and private universities, both within and outside of California.
- Excellent academic record of training in agricultural sciences, pest management, biological sciences, soil or environmental sciences, or related field
- Good writing and communication skills, or the desire to acquire those skills, is necessary
- Experience in farming and agriculture practices
- Desire to serve farmers, and an appreciation of agriculture
- Good work habits, some job experience, willingness to work hard
- Ability to follow directions and work cooperatively with others
- Public Speaking ability or the desire to acquire these skills
- Expressed desire to work in Cooperative Extension or applied field research and education will be given priority
- Willingness to tolerate outside conditions, often hot and dusty
- High ethical standards
- Must be willing to re-locate during the period
