Woody Biomass Utilization

vertical image 3
Woody biomass makes up a large portion of the total biomass in California and much of the western United States.

Woody biomass sources include:
-    manufacturing residuals from
     the  wood processing industry
-    post-consumer woody waste
     materials
-    forestry residuals from logging
-    residuals from fuels reduction
     and ecological restoration
     projects
-    agricultural residuals

Woody biomass in forests is a virtually untapped resource. Much of this forest biomass creates a high wildfire fuel hazard.  If there were more market options for woody biomass, it could help to recover some of the cost of important wildland fuel reduction and forest health projects.

The Woody Biomass Utilization group at UC Berkeley is raising awareness and assisting in the following areas:

Woody Biomass - the resource, the potential, the technology, the markets

Workshops - held throughout California and the West, primarily for land managers, contractors, community members, primary and secondary industry and other stakeholders

Grant Applications -  information and assistance is available for relevant grant programs
