Grants

There are a number of grants available that are relevant to woody biomass utilization projects.  This section will aim to explain and identify relevant programs.  It is currently a work in progress and will be updated soon.

USDA Forest Service TMU Woody Biomass Utilization Grant Program
This is a national program that runs on an annual basis.  It is managed by the State and Private Forestry Technology Marketing Unit located at the Forest Products Laboratory in Madison,  WI.  In the past there has been approximately $4m available nationally for projects that increase the utilization of woody biomass from federal lands and reduce the risk of wildfire and disease.  The approximate time schedule from the initial RFP to grant award is shown below:
    (1) Fall - RFP
    (2) November - Pre-applications due
    (3) December - Pre-application review
    (4) December - Successful pre-applicants notified
    (5) February - Full applications due
    (6) March - Full applications reviewed
    (7) April/May - Notification of successful projects and grant award
The schedule varies from year to year as does the fuding available.  Check the TMU homepage for further information.  We have also compiled maps that show the locations of successful projects for the grant in 2007, 2008 and 2009
