What's Required?
Complete and return application. Schedule and participate in interviewing process.
Once you receive acceptance into the program, you will attend approximately 80 hours of class instruction in horticulture. Instructors include UCCE professional and other experts in the community. Hands-on demonstrations are included, and there is a learn-by-doing emphasis in our training. There is a minor fee for materials, but the classroom instruction is free. Financial assistance is available for the materials fee.
In exchange for this comprehensive training, however, Master Gardeners agree to serve a minimum number of hours as a volunteer.
Our programs are neutral and unbiased towards specific commercial products and services. Volunteers may not solicit or perform contract services for personal gain while representing UCCE.
Who Can Use Title "Master Gardener?"
The title "Master Gardener" can be used only and exclusively in the Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Program. It may not be used for commercial purposes. Persons are expected to identify themselves as Master Gardeners only when performing volunteer work in this program.
To retain active status as a Master Gardener, a person must volunteer the required minimum number of hours annually, keep active in volunteer activities and attend supplemental training and monthly meetings.
