About 20% of the student population of the University of California come from other countries. They are financed by their families, governments, industries and grants of all kinds. Catalunya provides grants for students to do graduate studies in engineering and biological sciences. Other research programs in Spain provide graduate student support. La Caixa supports 100 graduate students each year who go to US Universities. In recent years 68 students have come to UC with support from la Caixa

(English) The Foundation "la Caixa", with the desire to contribute to the development of human potential in all its scope of activities is convinced of the importance of scientific progress and the importance of investigative and professional qualifications for the development of society. To this end, it announces 40 fellowships for study at any university or institute of higher education in the United States.

EDUCATION ABROAD
In a reciprocal manner the University of California sends about 500 undergraduate students to Spain each year through the Education Abroad Program (EAP). The EAP is the University's primary outreach to the international community. It offers UC students access to 6 locations in Spain. Other areas of the Mediterranean that have UC students include France, Italy, Turkey, Egypt and Israel.

THE CALIFORNIA/MEDITERRANEAN CONSORTIUM
The Cal/Med Consortium was established in December of 2005 to initiate, coordinate, and disseminate research on relevant economic issues related to key commodity groups that have traditionally been understudied and yet contribute significantly to the economies of California and the southern EU countries. These commodities include: olives and olive oil; tree nuts; grapes and wine; raisins; vegetables - processed and fresh; citruses - processed and fresh, and stone fruits. The formal name of the project is “Policies and Economics of Mediterranean Agriculture Products in the Global Marketplace” but for ease of communication, it is referred to as the “Cal/Med Consortium".
