Carbon Sequestration on Rangelands
The threat of global warming and the opportunity to manage carbon with soils has sparked considerable interest in market-based compensation of soil carbon sequestration that decreases greenhouse gas emissions. Rangelands managed for livestock production represent the largest land-use footprint globally. They also account for 25 to 35% of the global soil carbon pool. The build up of soil organic matter, consisting of approximately 50% carbon, in rangelands and pastures is known to increase soil fertility, water holding capacity, and forage productivity.
