Landscape Workgroup Introduction

The purpose of the Landscape Workgroup is to create and expand the network of UC research and extension personnel to enable the identification and solving of issue-related problems affecting the landscape industry, to provide opportunities for professional development, and provide a forum for communication between UC personnel and industry in the development of sound research and extension programs.

The need for quality landscapes is increasing as the urban population of California continues to grow. For example, in Southern California, t...

Landscape Workgroup Projects

•Refinement of Urban Landscape Water Requirements
The project seeks to identify needs and methodologies to achieve more refined estimates of the water requirements for landscape plant materials. During the first year, industry and agency personnel would be contacted and queried on the need for more precise information on the water requirements and the mechanism to disseminate this information to landscape irrigation managers. In addition, methodologies would be explored for experimental determination of more precise water requirements through review of literature and contact with researchers in the field. Research funds and industry support would be achieved through contact with the Irrigation Association and state and federal agencies.

•An evaluation of the landscape industry and its customers to improve adoption o
This project seeks to address the major deficiencies in landscape horticulture research, extension and utilization in California.

Three major clientele components of the landscape industry have received or utilized little or no UC research-based information. The landscape workgroup seeks to find out why adoption is so low and how to succeed in improving use of new research results that have important impacts on the landscape.

In addition, this project seeks to address and remedy the deficiencies in research, extension, and utilization of science based information by the California landscape industry by developing a more aggressive outreach campaign. The workgroup will work with a survey/evaluation science organization to determine the reasons specific practices are not used in the industry in order to develop effective educational programs to gain adoption.
