Food Stamps

Food Stamps is a federally-funded program that helps low-income persons buy supplemental food needed for good health.  For most households, food stamps are only part of their food budget; they must spend some of their own cash along with their food stamps in order to buy enough food for the month.

In general, food stamps are available for people who:

  • Are low-income workers.
  • Are unemployed or work part-time.
  • Receive welfare or other assistance.
  • Are elderly or disabled and live on a small income.
  • Are homeless.

Ensuring that all families, especially children, receive the food stamp benefits to which they are entitled has become a priority for HSA.  Outreach efforts have been increased and unique approaches to educating families about this assistance program have been adopted.
