Glossary of Wildlife Terms

Game mammal: Animals taken for sport including: deer, elk, prong-horned antelope, bears, rabbits, and tree squirrels.

Non-game mammal: All naturally occurring mammals in California that are not classified as game, furbearers or protected.

Furbearers: Animals taken for fur such as: foxes, raccoons, beavers and muskrats.

Protected: Species listed under the Endangered Species Act (endangered or threatened) or specifically protected by state or local regulations.
Restricted Use : Specially categorized pesticides that require a permit and/or special license or certificate to apply.
