Concerns with wildlife and pets

Chase squirrels? Who me?
Concerns associated with controlling ground squirrels in the presence of surrounding wildlife and domestic pets should be identified before starting any control program. Depending on the types of animals in the controlled area besides
dog and bait station
the ground squirrel, a different control regimen may be needed to be applied.  For example, in a field that is accessible to dogs and children, secure bait boxes should be used to prevent acess to poisoned grain.

Know the hazards and cautions of any control material you are using.  Thoroughly read all information and instructions that accompany the control material or method.   It would be useful to have the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) on hand as well for any situation that may arise.  The MSDS gives instructions on emergency procedures in case of accidental exposure.

Be sure to check and see if  endangered or protected species are present in the control area. If so, special restrictions may apply. You can get information on pesticide use and restrictions around endangered species online through the Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) Endangered Species Project.   It hosts a database that gives information on rodenticide use restrictions in your specific area.
