Poison bait is a common method of large-scale ground squirrel control because it requires relatively little labor when compared to other methods and achieves high efficacy results. It involves distributing bait, usually grain based, which is put in bait stations (anticoagulants only), or broadcast mechanically or by hand .

* If possible, use this method. It takes advantage of the natural foraging habits of the California ground squirrel and puts the least amount of toxins into the environment.
