Name:  Rock squirrel*

Distribution:  Southen Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Oklahoma, south through Arizona, New Mexico, and west Texas

General Characteristics:  Largest ground squirrel in its range.  Mottled grey/brown/black above, gray/brown front, brownish black behind, buff/white below.  Long, bushy tail.  Diurnal, will estivate in extremely hot weather.  Hibernates for short period of time in the north only.  Southern parts, active year-round.

Feeding Habit:  Nuts, seeds, acorns, currant fruits.  Sometimes can damage nearby crops.

Habitat:  Rocky areas
