Name:  Black-tailed Prairie Dog* Black-tailed prairie dog

Distribution:  Eastern Montana and southwest North Dakota to extreme southeast Arizona, New Mexico, and northwest Texas

General Characteristics:  Larger of the prairie dogs.  Pink/brown above and white/buff below.  Small tail with black tail.  Short, rounded ears.  Diurnal and active year-round.

Feeding Habits:  Green vegetation and insects

Habitat:  Shortgrass prairies
