Ground Squirrel BMP

Range

  • The home range of the California ground squirrel is normally less than 150 yards across.
  • Predators cause squirrels to remain close to the burrow entrance and limit foraging to that area.
  • While most squirrels travel only short distances, some have been known to move from one to five miles into new areas. However, if you see ground squirrels, the burrows are usually near by.

    How Range relates to control:

    Eating squirrel
Knowing how far a squirrel will travel from a burrow is important when baiting as it reduces the chance of baiting areas that do not need to be treated. Also, the California map that regionally locates different types of squirrels will help in identifying which type of California ground squirrel is causing damage versus any other type of squirrel. Although there are a number of sub-species of the California ground squirrel, control measures will most likely be dependent on the environment the squirrel lives in rather than the subspecies of squirrel.
