Per their name, the California ground squirrel lives in burrows in the ground. Squirrel burrows average about 4 inches in diameter and are often interconnected through a series of underground tunnel systems.

Habitat facts:
- Found on natural rangeland, pastures, grain fields, slope with scattered trees, rocky ridges.
- Avoids thick chaparral and dense woods.
Squirrel burrow near the ocean. - Prefer open areas where visibility is good to avoid natural enemies.
- But well-adaptable to many environmental situations.
