Distribution: Found throughout California, south-central Washington, western Oregon and western Nevada.
General Characteristics: Brown with black and buff flecks, with dark brown or black V pattern on upper back. Some white from sides of neck across shoulders and forelegs to hind. Bushy, brownish-grey tail above, edged with white below. This squirrel both hibernates in the winter and estivates in the during the hottest parts of the summer months. Diurnal.
Feeding Habits: Seeds, nuts, green vegetation. Many of California's food crops.
Habitat: Open areas, sparsely wooded hillsides, levys, fields, pastures, rocky areas. Very adapted to range of California environments.
