The Poultry Project consists of learning to select, care for, handle, breed and show avian species. We also actively compete in 4-H Poultry Judging, Avian Bowl. The bowl competitions are fast paced and rigorous knowledge based contests.
Througt this project, members will atttain the following skills: Responsibility, leadership, accountability, decision making and will also gain public speaking skills.
Members will be able to choose from over 350 breeds of fowl, or may choose to raise market species or a laying flock. Will have the opportunity to attend at least 4 local fairs throughout the year, as well as shows in the area, a poultry field day hosted by the Pacific Poultry Breeders Association, Avian Science Day at UC Davis and many more poultry related activities.
EXPECTATIONS: Members will be expected to do the following to complete their project.
1. Attend at least 80% of all project and Community Meetings.
2. Complete a 4-H Record Book at the end of the project year.
3. Learn to care for and handle their animal.
4. Acquire at least one bird of Standard quality for exhibition or showmanship.
5. Learn the complete 4-H Poultry Judging Manual and the sections of the 4-H Avian Bowl Manual required for this year.
6. Compete in at least one showmanship competition during the project year.
7. Have necessary means of transportation for themselves and their animal(s).
