Project Overview

GOALS
1. Understand the effects of teen parenthood on various realms of young people's lives.
2. Identify strategies that Latina/o teen parents view as supporting their roles as parents and in preventing subsequent pregnancies.
3. Incorporate the views and needs of Latina/o teen parents into recommendations for effective pregnancy prevention programs in California.
4. Contribute to youth and family development research on culturally appropriate strategies for pregnancy prevention.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES
1. A handbook for use by practitioners that describes the research findings along with recommended effective strategies for pregnancy prevention among Latina/o teens.
2. At least two professional papers published in a peer reviewed journal on effective strategies for pregnancy prevention among Latina/o teens.
3. Workshops delivered at local, state and national conferences.

PLAN OF ACTION
1. Develop and pilot teen questionnaire.(completed)
2. Recruit and hire young bilingual interviewers. (completed)
3. Conduct 64 interviews total, in Bay Area and Valley. Males, femailes, immigrant, non-immigrant. (January-June 2002)
4. Transcribe and translate interviews. (Feb-June)
5. Team will analyze data. (July-October)
6. Sub-team will draft findings. (Oct-Mar 2003)
7. Team will finalize findings: Prepare presentations and publications for practitioners and academics. (Mar-Sept)
