The Business Officer Institute (BOI) program represents a valuable institutional investment in the skills, knowledge and abilities of UC business officers. We encourage your commitment to your own professional development and to that of the people you manage. This high impact program features senior executives from campuses and central offices addressing important issues, including budget and finance, audit and internal controls, technology, ethics, sponsored research, risk assessment and human resource management.
BOI participants are assigned to teams of 8 to 10 colleagues from across the UC system. Teams work together on five exercises centered on Financial Management and Internal Controls, Employee Relations and Risk Management, Information Technology, Sponsored Projects, Fraud, Waste, and Abuse. Facilitators familiar with the BOI's content, objectives, assessment approach, and exercises assist these teams.
The next BOI session is scheduled for June 2 through June 5, 2008, in Newport Beach. Please note that the conference will start on Tuesday and will continue through Thursday with registration on Monday, June 2 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. and a dinner reception to follow from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Who Should Apply
Any business officer who has broad responsibility over the administrative functions of UCOP departments in budget and finance, human resources, payroll, internal controls, and sponsored projects is encouraged to apply.
Those of you with experience may not initially consider this program necessary. However, you might want to take the opportunity to share your expertise with others, learn the latest trends from senior decision-makers, and equip yourselves with first-hand knowledge of BOI content to enable you to recommend others for future BOI sessions. We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity personally and to recommend candidates who might benefit from it.
Timing of the Event and Expected Participation
On-site registration and pick-up of program materials begin at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, June 2nd. The program will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 3, and will end at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 5.
The expectation is that participants will attend every workshop. In order to receive their program certificates, participants must be present and actively participate throughout the three-day program. BOI coordinators will be provided with names of those participants who do not complete the program. Participants must keep in mind that the program runs to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday and should plan their travel arrangements accordingly.
Program Costs
The Office of the President covers most of the cost of the Institute, including guest rooms, the first night's dinner, and all breakfasts and lunches for all participants. The participants' locations are expected to cover the costs of travel and dinners on the other nights. To help defray travel costs, sessions will be offered, alternately, in Northern and Southern California.
Host Hotel
The location of the June 2008 BOI is the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach, 1107 Jamboree Road, Newport Beach. Bilha Coen will make all hotel reservations based upon the information that nominees provide on their web registration. Program participants should not contact the hotel regarding their room reservations. Participants will be assigned their own hotel room and, based on the completed web registration form, special needs will be accommodated.
Dress and Meals
Hotel meeting rooms can be cool so participants are encouraged to bring sweaters and/or jackets. There will be a dinner reception on Monday, June 2nd, from 6:00-8:00pm. No dinner is scheduled for Tuesday or Wednesday as former participants have indicated that they would like free evenings for dining in the area. Breakfast and lunch will be provided each day of the Institute.
