ANR Communication Services: Imaging & Posters

Batch Slide Scanning Service--for UC ANR Personnel ONLY

CS has installed a Fujiscan 5000 flatbed scanner capable of scanning forty 35mm slides in a batch. It is used primarily for scanning slides at high resolution for publication photos. It can scan flat art, slides, and negatives in a wide range of resolutions.

Overview: To use this service you must be a member of the Division of Agriculture and Natural Resouces, University of California. You need to send or deliver to us your slides and some information about the file type you would like to receive. We will ship the slides back to you and make the image files available via CD or File Transfer Protocol. We do the scan within 3 days of receiving your slides and can do around 120 in that time. We can do many more, it just takes longer.

Submitting Your Slides: Send us your slides in plastic slide sheets boxes arranged in the order and orientation (horizontals and verticals) you would like to have them scanned. We prefer to scan full batches of 40 or multiples of 40, but we can accept any number of slides. Once the job is done, usually within a week of receipt, we will ship them back to you or you can pick them up.

Include this form: Download the Scanning Form rev. 2005 . Here you will provide your contact information, recharge number, and directions regarding file types and method of receiving the files. Send your slides and the form to our new address:

1850 Research Park Drive, Suite 200

Your Choices : If there is a possibility that you need archive quality scans for future publication use, indicate that on the workorder form. If you are certain that your images are destined for computer use like PowerPoint or the WWW, then select that quality.

  • Archive (hi-rez): ~18MB TIF LZW. This is a lossless compression file that will expand about 30% in Photoshop and meet most professional printing needs. To use it in PowerPoint or other electronic delivery, you will need to make a copy and reduce the resolution in some photo editing software yourself. Never alter your original hi-rez scans! Always make a copy and work on that.
  • Computer (lo-rez): ~200K JPEG. These 1024x768 files will fill your screen and can be used in presentations and, if compressed further, websites.

Receiving Your Files: We can ship CDs containing your image files. A full batch of 40 archive quality files will not quite fit on one CD. Or, you can receive the files electronically using File Transfer Protocol (FTP). We will email FTP instructions when we contact you that the job has been completed. The image files we send will be named using this default format: 031101_001.tif (or jpg). This would indicate file #1 was scanned on Nov. 1, 2003. If you would prefer some specific preface (your name or project instead of the scan date) you will need to specify that on the form.

Cost: We charge $2 per slide for hi-rez and $1 per slide for low-rez, plus $1 per CD. We clean the slides before scanning but don't do custom cropping or scratch and spot removal, so the better condition your slides are in, the better the scans. There is no charge for FTP use.
