Keeping it very simple....

This is where all the talk about DPI (dots per inch) comes in. In recent years, the terms DPI and PPI (pixels per inch) have been used interchangeably in most scanning software. We prefer to use the phrase "pixels per inch" or PPI since a dot can be many different things. For the most part, the setting you use depends on the abilities of your printer.

Here's the simple rule: Use 300 PPI for major publications and no less than 150 PPI for other printing needs. PPI (pixels per inch) originally referred to what is primarily displayed on a television or computer display. 72 ppi is the setting to use. TV or computer displays require less data in an image file than most print applications.
