How Can My Office Join?
The infomation on this page is intended for the use of the UCCE or REC Office Liaison before an office joins the ANR Computer Security Project. If you have any questions about the information on this page, direct them to James at jbai@ucdavis.edu (530) 754-3915 or Claudia at camyers@ucdavis.edu (530) 754-3909.
To prepare an office to join the ANR Computer Security Project, the Office Liaison needs to do the following:
- Identify any non-compliant equipment that is on your local network. Certain models of Tera Station or Link Station are known to be out of compliance with the UC Davis Cyber Safety Policy
because they exchange data with other network devices in a non-secure way. If you have any of these devices on your network, please let us know so we can help determine your option. If a non-compliant device is not on the network (e.g., it is only connected to one computer with a USB cable), it will not be a problem. - Do a couple of speed tests and let us know the download and upload speeds for both tests. You should do two tests using the same test site at two different times on the same day. You may run the test using SpeedTest
, Speakeasy
, PC Pit Stop
, or another reliable testing application if you have a preference. - Read through the information on this website, especially the sections Before Migration, During Migration, and After Migration. You should also download the Liaison Checklist
and take a look at it. These pages should give you an idea of what's involved and what you and your staff will need to do before our team arrives. - Complete steps 1 through 4 in the Before Migration section yourself. If you have no problems with these steps, you can email the link to every PC user in your office and have them perform the same steps or go around and gather the info yourself.
- Note that older computers such as Windows 98 / ME and the Home Editions of Windows XP and Vista do not support Active Directory and so are not included in this Project. You may wish to upgrade Home Editions of XP and Vista to Professional or Business editions if the hardware allows. Please go to the Software--How and Where to Get It
page for more information. - If you know that a computer is going to be replaced within a few months, it may be better not to join that computer to Active Directory during our visit. When the new replacement computer arrives, follow the instructions at After Migration and we will add the new computer remotely to Active Directory. Even if a computer is slated for replacement, you still need to include it on the checklist since we may need to reconfigure printer or server access for the user. You can indicate that a computer is about to be replaced in the remarks column of the checklist
