Growing Your Own Vegetables From Seed

Starting vegetables from seed can save money and will give you access to thousands of vegetable varieties not available as transplants.  We discuss which seeds are best planted directly in the ground and how and when to start them.  We will move on to seed that are best started indoors and how to plant them and considerations such as the importance of cleanliness, seed starting mixes, which containers you can use, how many seeds to plant and how deeply, seed viability and hybrid vs. open pollinated seeds, watering, fertilizing, providing light and heat for your seedlings and hardening off seedlings before transplanting them out into the garden.  Students will then plant several 6-packs of seeds to take home with them.  Resource lists and a seed-starting brochure will be provided to students.

Materials Fee: $10, payable at the workshop.  Limit 20 attendees per workshop.  Directions will be emailed to attendees 10 days prior to the workshop.

California Garden Web Launched

Visit the California Garden Web at http://cagardenweb.ucdavis.edu.

The University of California Statewide Master Gardener Program has launched a new Web site to serve as an information portal for California gardeners. The UC Statewide Master Gardener Program staff designed the Web site to organize and extend UC's vast store of research-based information about gardening, landscapes and lawns to the public.

The Web site focuses on sustainable gardening practices and uses a question and answer format to present solutions. A blog on the Web site's home page, updated weekly, highlights gardening content pertinent to the season. The site also links to useful gardening resources on other UC Web pages.

Development of the new Web site was funded by the Elvenia J. Slosson Endowment for Ornamental Horticulture.
